My Love Mine All Mine
Mitski Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Through the big top tent up high
Here before and after me
Shinin' down on me
Moon, tell me if I could
Send up my heart to you?
So, when I die, which I must do
Could it shine down here with you?
'Cause my love is mine, all mine
I love, my, my, mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine, all mine, all mine
My baby, here on earth
Showed me what my heart was worth
So, when it comes to be my turn
Could you shine it down here for her?
'Cause my love is mine, all mine
I love, my, my, mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine, all mine
Nothing in the world is mine for free
But my love, mine, all mine, all mine
In Mitski's song "My Love, Mine, All Mine," the lyrics delve into a deep introspective exploration of love, connection, and the transient nature of life. The imagery of the moon symbolizes a constant presence watching over the singer, offering a sense of continuity and comfort in a world that is ever-changing. The metaphor of sending up one's heart to the moon signifies a longing for eternal connection and a desire for a love that transcends beyond the limitations of mortality.
The repetition of the phrase "my love is mine, all mine" emphasizes the singer's possessive and protective nature towards their feelings, highlighting the intensity and exclusivity of their emotions. The idea that love is the only true possession in the world reflects a personal attachment to this ethereal and intangible emotion, suggesting that love is the most valuable and enduring aspect of human existence.
The mention of the singer's "baby" on earth further reinforces the theme of love and connection, showcasing how this earthly relationship has given their heart worth and meaning. The plea to have their love shine down for this significant person after the singer's passing underscores the depth of their devotion and the hope for a continued bond even beyond death.
Overall, "My Love, Mine, All Mine" is a poignant reflection on the transformative power of love, the fragility of life, and the profound impact that connections with others can have on our sense of self. Mitski's introspective lyrics invite listeners to contemplate the unique and profound nature of love and its ability to shape our identities and perceptions of the world.

crying a little bc now we have a mitski song we can affectionately nickname "my love" 😭😭😭
UPDATE AFTER MV RELEASE:
"To love is truly the best and most beautiful thing I ever did." - Mitski, explaining the song "My Love Mine All Mine"
This song isn't necessarily about a specific person that you love and that you can call yours, but rather the concept of love itself. The fact that nothing truly stays, material things will eventually leave you and even your body will deteriorate once you die, so not much can really be considered yours. But something that can be considered yours is love, love that is yours as long as you will it to be. Love that can be shared that even when you aren't around, it can still "shine" on others just as how the moon shines for everyone from up above.
I think that's also what is depicted in the music video, the stall stack of chairs and the highest chair on top representing the moon. When she moves from her chair at the bottom and climbs to the top, it is representative of her offering her love up to the moon, so that the love can shine on others far beyond herself. And when she looks out while she's at the top, she can see the hint of a bright sunrise over the open waters. Once you decide to share that love, you can see the bright impact it has on others, but aside from that, it also allows you personally to see the world a little bit brighter, and lets you open your world up to the effects of this love.
If I were to choose one word to encapsulate TLIIASAW, it would actually be "love", and I think this is song is the thesis of the album, and has been described to be its core song by other sources. This is actually what is in her current Spotify bio: "The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people. I wish I could leave behind all the love I have after I die, so I can shine all this goodness, all this love that I've created onto other people." An album that feels like a love that's haunting the land.
